The Sensory Room

A sensory room is a therapeutic space designed to stimulate the different senses in a safe and structured way. It is often used with children, especially those with sensory processing disorders or autism spectrum disorder.

Objectives of the Sensory Room

  • To regulate sensory responses.
  • To improve focus and attention.
  • To reduce stress and anxiety.
  • To develop motor and cognitive skills.

Components of the Sensory Room

The sensory room contains various means to stimulate the senses in a structured and safe way. Visual stimulation includes the use of colored lights, bubble tubes, and soothing light projectors to create a comfortable and engaging environment. Auditory stimulation involves playing calming music or nature sounds to help with relaxation and regulate attention. Tactile stimulation includes the use of sensory balls, materials with different textures, and sensory sand to develop sensory perception and tactile discrimination. Motor stimulation includes the use of balance balls and pressure pads to support motor coordination and enhance body awareness and balance.

How the Room Works

The therapist:

  • Assesses the child’s sensory needs.
  • Selects appropriate activities.
  • Observes the response.
  • Adjust the level of stimulation as needed.

Sessions are usually individual and designed according to each patient’s treatment plan.
